Have you ever had a dream so big that it didn’t even fit in the room with you?
Have you ever felt the intimidation and the sheer unadulterated fear of having a dream so big that it scared the holy bajeebers out of you?
Do you ever find yourself asking your imaginary minions these questions:
- “How did I get here?”
- “This is not the direction I wanted to go, what happened?”
- “What in the heck am I doing with my life?”
I was there, I was so there once. I was sitting on the edge of disaster. Seemingly having everything so put together and polished that everyone was jealous.
“Ooh, why can’t we be just like them? They have all the coolest toys? They even have matching Jeeps. They are such a cute couple!” No one noticed our reality, “They never take a vacation. They are always traveling for work, but never for fun. They must be the hardest working couple on the planet. They constantly have balls, plates, bowling pins, knives, and chainsaws tossed up in the air to juggle. How do they do it all? They never seem to slow down. Boy, they sure do run, run, run all the time!”
Life was passing us by at the speed of light. Little did we know that it was all about to come to a screeching halt and then crumble around us. It was a surreal, “This can’t really be happening” moment. It sucked. You can read more about it here. This isn’t a post about THAT story again.
Who throws away everything they’ve built?
Someone in pain.
Someone standing at the threshold of all that has passed before them and all that is still to come and realizing, finally, that they are more in control of their destiny than they ever believed possible.
Someone ready to change the world…one person at a time…starting with themselves.
Pain is the strongest motivator for change. Just ask the scientists and psychologists. Indeed, it is almost impossible to effect lasting change unless there is a physical or emotional pain catalyst. It’s not completely impossible, but it’s very, very difficult.
What can you do if you want to change yourself? Your situation? Your patterns? Your Life?
You can invest in yourself.
Truly see the good that is inside of you and embrace it wholeheartedly. Ignore the naysayers, they suck anyway.
Find people who support you and remind you of how incredibly awesome you are. We are the sum of the five people we spend the most time with. Be sure you are surrounding yourself with positive influences.
But, also be mindful of not just surrounding yourself with a ship full of ‘yes’ people. You know what I mean, people who nod their heads in the affirmative no matter what you say. I had that problem in a job once. It got old. I quit. Now I work from home and I surround myself with people who positively adore me, yet challenge me!
They push me to be a better version of myself every. single. day.
Life is much, much too short to spend it in a vast expanse of emptiness wondering why you get up everyday and repeat the same awful Groundhog Day experience over and over again.
Let me ask you something. When’s the last time you did something that you truly enjoy?
When’s the last time you:
- enjoyed a hobby (golf, basketball, woodworking, painting, etc)
- read a good book – just for you
- played with your kids – like time was standing still
- enjoyed an evening unplugged – from any and all technology
- spent time with parents or other family members – really catching up and listening to them regale you with stories of when they were young
- wrote something – a book, a letter, a poem, in a journal
- drew something – with crayons, colored pencils, paint, charcoal
- volunteered your time
- went for a walk, hike, or a jog – for the enjoyment of it
- sat on the porch and just watched the busy, busy world rush by – you, yourself calm, for just a moment
You have the power to change your life – I did.
