YOU CAN CHANGE THE WORLD!
Today is the day to start a movement. The power of one is so much more awesomely effective than some might believe. Well, those naysayers are wrong and it’s time to prove it!
Be kinder:
Be kinder to everyone you meet today. The reality is that the kindness you bestow upon someone today may be just the lift their spirit needs to keep them going. Life is hard. You can single-handedly make life better for every single person you come in contact with. Just by simply being kinder – to everyone.
Be more generous:
I know you’re already giving every ounce of blood, sweat and tears – time and money too – that you can to the world. And you probably feel like you aren’t getting much of anything back in return right now. Be more generous anyway. You can give more time, or more money, or just more thoughtfulness in your actions….to everyone you meet and to everyone in your life who relies on you.
Remember the beautiful story of the man who was walking along on a beach as the tide was going out and saw that it was covered with starfish. He came across another man walking along the beach towards him and watched in disbelief as this man picked up each starfish that he came to and tossed it back into the ocean. ONE BY ONE. The first man asked the second man what on Earth he was doing. The second man said simply that he was saving these starfish before they died. The first man chuckled, for there was well over 100 starfish as far as they could see from where they were standing and he felt sure that the second man’s efforts were completely futile, he couldn’t possibly save them all. And so the first man said “What good does that do? You’re just wasting your time. There are 100’s of them, you can’t possibly make a difference!” The second man quietly picked up another starfish, tossed it back into the ocean, and said “I made a difference to that one.” Then he continued down the beach, slowly and methodically picking up each starfish he came to and throwing it back into the ocean.
Take care of each starfish that you come across in your daily path, because you CAN make a difference.
Be more present:
Be there for your loved ones. Don’t just sit in the same room and stare at the TV, read emails or frantically text each night without communicating. Have dinner together at the table; talk, laugh, ask each other how their day was. Engage with one another, because I guarantee you that life is way too short and someday you will be out of time (read my About page for more on this topic). Please don’t wait for ‘someday’ to do the things you want to do with your loved ones. If you want to sit on the porch after dinner and enjoy the breeze, watch the neighborhood bustling, with a cool drink of tea in your hands just chatting – do it. If you want to go for a drive, go for a walk, go for a hike, or go for a bike ride – do it. If you want to go to the park, go to a yard sale, explore the local library or the local public landmarks in your town – do it. If you want to fly a kite, play ball, play tennis, toss a frisbee, shoot the hoops or go swimming at the local rec center – do it. There is no time like the present to be, to just be…..with your loved ones.
If an opportunity comes knocking to spend some time with someone you care about, but you feel your ‘life’ is too hectic to take time to spend with them…..read the obvious sign that life is trying to give you that LIFE IS ABOUT SPENDING TIME WITH THOSE YOU LOVE. Life is not about work, or money, or homework, or bills, or rushing to and from to constantly do everything. Life is about being, not doing. Slow down and just enjoy time together, in each other’s presence, talking and listening to what is really going on in each other’s heads. I promise you it isn’t wasting time.
Start a movement:
What are you passionate about? Do you even know? Take the time to figure that out. Then take the time to actually spend some time doing what you’re passionate about. You have wonderful talents and gifts that you were endowed with. Treat others to the pleasure of getting to enjoy your talents and gifts. Share them on a blog; sing in church or even karaoke; knit, sew or create beautiful crafts for others to use and enjoy; coach or educate others in lifestyle changes; motivate others with your exuberant energy.
Start a movement today – just by being you and enjoying all that mankind has to offer. Love all.
Go ahead, do it!
What do you think? Do you believe in the power of one? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
